Star Wars Macarons
May 07, 2016
Hello there fellow Jedi. These are the macarons you are looking for! These Star Wars Macarons are what you need if you are planning a Star Wars dessert table, or simply a huge fan of the films. Featuring Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Young Annakin, BB-8, R2D2, Yoda, Chewbacca, Ewok, Darth Vader and Storm Trooper!
I gathered my family of Star Wars soft toys on Star Wars Day (May the 4th, because May the Force be with you) for a mini photo shoot with the macarons. In the picture, they appear to be having some serious discussion but are probably just thinking, "Do I really look like that?".
It was a eureka moment to use white sugar sprinkles for Yoda's hair haha. But my favourites are Princess Leia (such cute buns!) and BB-8. Which is your favourite?
I must admit these macarons were extremely time consuming, probably cause I was ambitious and decided to make them all in one go; That equates to many separate piping bags and different coloured batters. I must have spent at least 4 hours on these... but oh so worth it.
To my family of Star Wars macarons, I am your baker.

Ingredients
[For Macaron Shells]
Meringue: 140g of Egg whites + 180g of Castor sugar
160g of Ground almonds
160g of Powdered/icing sugar
150g of Dark chocolate chips
150ml of Heavy cream
Directions
[For Macaron Shells]
1. Make the meringue. Beat the egg whites on low speed using an electric mixer until it is white and frothy (approximately 1 minute). Gradually add the sugar 1/4 at a time. When the first addition of sugar has completely dissolved (approximately 1 minute later), increase the mixer speed to medium and add until all the sugar has been incorporated. Continue to beat until stiff peaks form.
2. Sift in almond powder and icing sugar.
3. Begin macaronage process. Using a spatula, fold and lightly scrape the top of the batter. Continue until the wet and dry ingredients just start to combine.
Now, we are going to make the different characters.
1. Divide the batter! You can choose specific characters you want and divide accordingly. For example, if you are making 4 different characters, split the batter into 4 equal portions. Really need to use estimation in the following few steps.
2. Make different coloured batter! Further divide the batter based on the ingredient list above for the colours required per character. E.g. "Grey: Black food colouring" means you have to add just one drop of black food colouring for grey colour.
3. To each batter, continue the macaronage process until you get a molten-like mixture and drips down like a ribbon when lifted.
4. Transfer batter into piping bags. Again, refer to the ingredient list above to see what size tips are needed for the piping bags.
Time to pipe! Pipe out batter onto baking trays lined parchment paper. After all piping is complete, let the shells dry for approximately 30 minutes in an air-conditioned room. (not including time between piping when letting shells dry). You should be able to touch it gently with the tip of your finger without it sticking. Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C for approximately 10 - 13 minutes.
May the force be with you!

After shells are baked, draw facial features with black edible marker. Pipe out hands with light brown royal icing.
For Young Annakin Skywalker
Start with hair (yellow-orange), followed by face (light brown). Tap the tray on the table top to spread the batter and remove air bubbles. Let the shells dry for about 10 minutes in an air con room before piping on another layer of fringe. After shells are baked, draw facial features with black edible marker.
