Rilakkuma Mocha Macarons

October 07, 2013

One of the more popular Sanrio characters, other than Hello Kitty, is Rilakkuma! When I was younger, I had the impression that Rilakkuma looked permanently grumpy (just look at that frown on his face). It was not until later on that I discovered Rilakkuma means "bear in a relaxed mood".

Rila = Relaxed
Kuma = Bear

So maybe his grumpy face is actually his "keep-calm-and-relax" face.

"At all time and everywhere he goes he is continuously lazy and relaxed.
He is totally stress-free and also doing things on his own pace."

Since Rilakkuma is the epitome of relaxation, what better way to distress but to enjoy Rilakkuma macarons while sipping a hot steaming cup of coffee? Thus, I made Rilakkuma mocha macarons!

I added a few spoons of coffee powder to the basic macaron recipe. I'm relieved that the addition of coffee powder did not mess up with the chemistry of the batter - no cracked shells!

The filling is coffee flavored dark chocolate, a perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness.

The details for Rilakkuma's features are decorated with royal icing. There's just so much you could achieve with royal icing!

To be honest, I was initially worried that Rilakumma's face might have been in the wrong shade of brown. It is hard to predict the exact colors of the macaron shells because the colors change when they are baked. Furthermore, they brown very easily. But the Rilakkuma shells turned out perfectly, and I'm really pleased with the results!

After eating these Rilakkuma macarons, "you will be dragged into Rilakkuma’s world and become lazy and relaxed while watching what everything he does". Isn't that the way life should be? Okay, maybe we can't be lazy allllllllll the time, but it's nice to unwind once in a while.

Here's to a relaxed life!

  2. How do you store the complete macaron decorated with royal icing? I heard the royal icing can break down if it is store in the fridge due to condensation.

  3. Hi Kim! I usually leave it outside for approximately 15 minutes before transferring them into the fridge. When you remove them, give them a while to harden up again. Shouldn't be much of a problem :)
